The Archive of Social Democracy is the most important German archive for the history of labour movements. It hosts German and international sources coming from social democratic and socialist parties, free trade unions, as well as with individual politicians and trade unionists within such organizations. The archive’s documents are an essential source for social history in general and for the contemporary history of the Federal Republic of Germany. Having evolved from the Social Democratic Party’s former organzational archive, the Archive’s history is rooted in the very beginnings of Germany’s Social Democratic movement. Nonetheless, for historical reasons, the Archive of Social Democracy is more than just the party’s archive, its huge collections of documents encompassing the history of a whole social movement.
